Mid-Florida Research and Education Center: New Grape Variety a Pleasing Bunch Southern Jewel, the latest grape variety issued by IFAS, is high-yielding, disease resistant and produces fruit in big bunches. IFAS developmental biology professor Dennis Gray, who led the team that created the new muscadine variety, says the new grape has been in the works since 1994.

Food Science & Human Nutrition: Thanks in part to the Food Science and Human Nutrition department, Florida is the country’s leader for tomato safety standards. Through the efforts of industry leaders, joined by elected officials, state agencies and the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and Food Science and Human Nutrition department, the state recently enacted laws requiring tomatoes to be grown and handled according to a best-practices manual. The new laws will reduce the risk of Florida tomatoes being affected by pathogens such as Salmonella bacteria. They will also reassure consumers that Florida tomatoes are a safe product.

Soil and Water Science - Soil Microbial Ecology Laboratory: The Soil Microbial Ecology Laboratory led by Andy Ogram is engaged in a range of activities that include research, teaching, and a service component. The primary activity of the laboratory is investigating linkages between microbial community structure and function in nutrient impacted regions of the Everglades.

Dr. Lonnie O. Ingram and Co-PI's Drs. K.T. Shanmugam, J.Maupin-Furlow and J.F. Preston, III were awarded $4.25M to set up a pilot plant to convert cellulosic biomass to ethanol.
