Instructions to Review online CRIS AD-421s

(View the PDF file.)

Important

Annual reporting of accomplishments on FAES/CRIS research projects is a part of the accountability process. Failure to do so may affect the availability of some research funds. Reports are available in many formats to researchers, administrators, governmental officials, and the public worldwide via (1) the World Wide Web, (2) DIALOG services, (3) CD-ROM (AGRISEARCH on SilverPlatter), and (4) mail from the Current Research Information System (CRIS).

Please Note:

Consider entering and spell-checking the report in your favorite word processor for pasting into the Web form. It must not exceed 3200 characters, including spaces. Save it as an ASCII text file. You may (1) enter the report on the Web form yourself or (2) provide the report on diskette to a second party for entering for you - a designated person in your Unit or Christine Skinner Sloan, Dean for Research Office, P.O. Box 110200. In the latter case, be sure to include the project number and title for identification as well as whether it is a Progress Report (P) or Termination Report (T).
CRIS can only use ASCII text (files with the extension .txt, NOT .doc or .wpd). Imbedded word-processing symbols (including line wraps) result in error messages. Also, CRIS cannot accept any special characters such as degree symbols, math symbols, Greek letters, italics, boldface, super- or sub-scripts, or underlines. Please substitute suitable words and alternate characters. Also, do not use the question mark (?) because it means something else to the CRIS computer.

To Gain Access

  • Open the CRIS Forms Assistance homepage: http://cwf.uvm.edu/cris .
  • Under the heading "For Investigators" select the "AD-421 Progress/Termination Report".
  • Click the state of Florida on the map.
  • Select: FLA - Agricultural Experiment Station, Univ of Florida. (This is the default)
  • Enter the password, then click the Proceed button (Call Christine Skinner Sloan for the password 352-392-3150; SC 622-3150; csloan@ufl.edu).
  • Enter the name of the PI (first-named investigator) and select Enter/Edit Information to display the list of projects requiring reports from the principal investigator, if any.
  • Select one project in turn from the list by clicking on the "radio button" if it does not already contain a dot (.) then click the Proceed button.

Completing the Form

  • Choose the appropriate report format, either Progress or Termination (see on-line instructions). State/grant projects (not USDA/CSREES) have an automatic 1-year extension (grace period) beyond the expiration date. Federal formula (Hatch, Regional, McIntire-Stennis, Animal Health and CSREES grant) projects must be terminated in the year in which they expire. If the expiration date is not correct, notify Christine Skinner Sloan. Provide a copy of the official Notice of Award for grants.
  • Progress/Termination Report - The narrative is limited to 3200 characters (including spaces). The progress report narrative should list findings and accomplishments with brief comments as to why the results are significant scientifically or practically. If it is too soon to report accomplishments, characterize the status or stage of the work.
  • The termination report narrative is a brief summary of accomplishments for the entire life of the project. Include only publications not previously submitted.
  • Impact Statement - In 1600 characters or less, summarize your project's economic, environmental, and/or social impact. Use full sentences and non-technical language. This statement should answer the questions, "What difference does it make and to whom," and "What's the benefit."
    Example Impact Statement:
Specific information on the influence of cold temperatures on adelgid survival will help define geographic areas to anticipate infestations of economic importance in Vermont. By monitoring the population dynamics of the mites over the growing season researchers will get a clearer picture of the interaction between predator and prey. The expectation is that T. pyri will eliminate the need for miticides at most locations.
  • Publications - List significant publications issued during the reporting period (journal articles, published abstracts, books, book chapter, and theses). Please DO NOT enter authors in all capital letters and DO NOT number the citations. The publication year MUST follow the authors' names (as shown below) as expected by the computer program.
    Example Publication Citation:
Wu, J., Ullrich, R.C. and Novotny, C.P. 1996. Regions in the Z5 mating gene of Schizoophyllum commune involved in Y-Z binding and recognition. Mol. Gen. Genet. 252:739-745.

  • Select the Report Complete button when you are finished which will make it available for submitting to CRIS. However, once you select this button, you will need to contact Christine Skinner Sloan if you need to gain access to it again.

Accessing Additional Progress Forms

Select Return from the Confirmation Screen to gain access to additional projects for a given PI. Click on the "radio button" of another project and follow the same steps as outlined above. If completing reports for additional projects at a later date, just follow the instructions under To Gain Access.
